Every year, more than 115 million animals are experimented in laboratories.

This practice is cruel, unreliable, and unnecessary. In the process of developing new ingredients, some companies conduct further animal tests to assess the safety of these new ingredients. From all the animals captured in the wild or bred for experiments, animal testing is not legally required for cosmetics to be sold in the United States, South Korea, Guatemala, and several states in Europe.

The European Union opposes the choice of unnecessary use of animals for Testing. Some ineffective tests performed on rats, rabbits, and guinea pigs are skin and eye irritation tests where chemicals are rubbed on the shaved skin or dripped into the eyes of restrained rabbits without any pain relief. Another one is when they force-feed to look for signs of illness or reactions, such as cancer or hormone disruptors. Experimental animals do not classify under the Animal Welfare Act and are killed without any pain relief – typically by suffocation, neck-break, or decapitation. Banned by the European Union, they are finding alternatives for cosmetics tests in animals.

Human Society International is working around the world to end animal testing forever. To create a world where animals no longer have to suffer to produce lipstick, the Human Cosmetics Act was introduced to prohibit animal testing for cosmetics in the United States. Scientists are developing a new approach to Testing using ultra-fast cell tests and advanced technology to deliver human-relevant results, whereas animal tests take months or years.

China has the largest market worldwide. For foreign companies to sell cosmetics in China, they are required to undergo animal testing by the Chinese policy. Although companies that were not cruelty-free in their domestic countries, they are subject to animal testing and thus are not cruelty-free in China.

AROMATICA once considered entering the China market but decided to withdraw for that reason. AROMATICA could not give up the philosophy of vegan and cruelty-free beauty brand. Our philosophy goes beyond cosmetics to our new pet products. The latest launched pet shampoo is vegan and cruelty-free. AROMATICA will continue to conduct ethical sourcing and produce products that make people and animals happy. We encourage you to support our animal ethics policy.

How to help

You can pledge to purchase products which are cruelty-free by checking if they are vegan and not tested on animals. If you want to fight against animal testing, contact your legislator to support cruelty-free legislation.

To me, cruelty is the worst of human sins. Once we accept that a living creature has feelings and suffers pain, then by knowingly and deliberately inflicting suffering on that creature, we are guilty, whether it be human or animal.”

-Jane Goodall
